SCIHL Division 3 Playoff Edition

Semi-Final 1 - Young Guns (1) vs AsiaXpat (4)

Young Guns establish early lead to reach the SCIHL Championships Young Guns calmed their nerves after a score first half of the period when Fabrizio Faita fires home a rebound off a Yaann Yuen attempt with over 6 minutes left in the first to open the scoring. Just 3 minutes later, a costly AsiaXpat giveaway in their own defensive corner as an errant pass thru the middle is right on the stick of Danny Chiu in the high slot who walks in uncontested, and fires stick side past a startled Martin Jim to make it 2-0 after the first period.

A poor pass at centre ice by AsiaXpat proved costly as the puck was intercepted by Calix Ma who then walked past the remaining defenseman and goes top corner short side to make it 3-0. Theo Wong replied 5 minutes later with Xpat’s first of the night from a Gavino Ng pass, followed by David Finifter just 42 seconds later with a quick shot catching Cameron Chiu out to close the gap. Young Guns put the pressure on for the remainder of the period, catching
3 posts /cross bars. 3-2 after 2 periods and we had ourselves a game again.

However just 1 minute into the 3rd, Izzac Chan restored a 2-goal lead and a few minutes later, Ma competed a wrap around goal to make it 5-2 and a nice cushion back for Young Guns with 7 minutes to go. A deflection by Allan Yee pulled the score to 5-3, but not enough as Young Guns down AsiaXpat for their place in the finals.

Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 24 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) received 28 shots against.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Calix Ma (Young Guns)
2. Cameron Chiu (Young Guns)
3. Howard Chun (AsiaXpat)

Semi-Final 2 - RBC Lions (2) vs VetiVa (3)

VetiVa hold off Young Guns and wins in a shootout

In the other semifinal, RBC Lions faced VetiVa. RBC beat VetiVa 2 games to 1 over the regular season including a 7-1 trouncing the last time they met. This was a much closer game than the last time out as VetiVa seemed to have resolved their defensive lapses and the 2 teams traded chances only for Grant Phillips, or Nicholas Sellars to be there to keep the score even.

It wasn’t until a power play opportunity midway in the first did Vetiva break the ice as it took a double deflection off a point shot to beat Phillips. Jason Yip shot from the point, Rob Chiu deflected in the high slot and a screening Art Tam deflected again just outside the crease to bounce one by Phillips. 1-0 after the first for VetiVa.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the 2nd even with special teams while the penalty parade continued.

Midway in the 3rd, it was Jason Yip once again on the power play as his point found the back of the net past a screened Phillips with Tam once again on his doorstep. RBC put on a big push in the last few minutes, but Sellars stood tall stopping a few great chances in the dying minutes to keep the shutout and book a date with Young Guns in the Championship final.

Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 27 shots, while Grant Phillips (RBC Lions) received 23 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa)
2. Jason Yip (VetiVa)
3. Grant Phillips (Young Guns)
