AsiaXpat picks apart VetiVa
AsiaXpat looking to make it 3 wins in a row, while VetiVa was hoping to get a first win in regulation. Both teams started strong and this game was going at a quick pace.
The teams exchanged chances early, but it was Justin Wong who opened the scoring with a wicked wrister from the high slot that found its way by 4 players and thru the wickets to give Xpat the early lead. Ray Tang from VetiVa broke loose and had a semi-break on the left side, beating Grant Phillips (LPP) only to find the post. Phillips stopped several chances as VetiVa controlled most of the first but couldn’t solve him until Justin Kuok snuck in from the point and fired it thru the 6 hole to tie the game at 1.
In the 2nd, Theo Wong was johnny on the spot as a shot from the right side deflected off a leg and across the crease and land on his stick to give him an open net to regain the lead. While Xpat had a power play, Arthur Tam intercepted a pass in the Xpat zone and fired one off the post past Phillips to tie the game again. Theo Wong finished a nice play from Justin
Wong and Howard Chun to give Xpat a 3-2 lead after 2 periods. So far this was a quick and entertaining game as both teams exchanged chances and only the goalies were keeping the score low.
VetiVa continued to press to open the third and under pressure, Tam drew a tripping penalty giving VetiVa a chance to equalize. However, during the powerplay, Theo Wong picked off a D-to-D pass and scored a short-handed breakaway to give Xpat a 2-goal lead. The SH goal seemed to demoralize VetiVa and from there on.
Wong could have had his 4th of the game, but as he shot into an empty net, Justin Wong went sliding thru the crease on his tummy just in time to block Theo’s shot. Play continued, and Xpat began controlling more of the play until Howard Chun taking it up the left side, deking by the defense, and scoring short side just over the pad to make it 5-2. Jason Wong rounded out the scoring soon after as Xpat ran VetiVa all around the zone and thru the scramble Jason put it in the open net.
A promising start for VetiVa ended up creating more questions, while Xpat finally had other "Wong’s" and players scoring besides Theo. If they can continue to get the secondary scoring, they will be able to challenge the top 2 teams (RBC & Young Guns) in the standings.
Grant Phillips (LPP - AsiaXpat) faced 24 shots while Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 25 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
2. Justin Wong (AsiaXpat)
3. Howard Chun (AsiaXpat)
RBC Lions dominate JOG Sportswear
2 teams going different directions. RBC Lions have so far been one of the best teams of the season while JOG have been struggling to win a game and was just above VetiVa in the standings from extra OT loss.
The first period was a tight affair with both teams generating good chances and both teams had 8 shots on net, but it took a powerplay goal by Warren Ang to opening the scoring. 1-0 after 1.
RBC seemed to find their legs more in the 2nd, or was it that JOG started looking tired, or was it the play of Bonnie Lui who had a massive game forechecking and giving JOG no time or space all game wearing them down. The momentum shifted to RBC as they doubled up on their chances and had 3 unanswered goals. First from Gary Lawarence, followed by 2
unassisted goals from David Finifter and Jackie Chan blowing the game wide open. 4-0 after 2 periods for RBC.
This continued in the 3rd as Finifter scored is 2nd to make it 5-0 before captain Eugene Wong finished a play from Corey Ng and Jimmy Thai to spoil Grant Phillips shutout bid. But it was too little too late as Jackie Chan rounded out the scoring with 2 more goals to get his first 3 goals of the season and a hattrick.
With the win, RBC stays on tied at the top of the standings with Young Guns, while JOG stays in 5th, 1 point above VetiVa.
Carson Leung (JOG - LPP) faced 29 shots, while Grant Phillips (RBC Lions) had a lighter workload with 18 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Jackie Chan (RBC Lions)
2. Bonnie Lui (RBC Lions)
3. David Finifter (RBC Lions)
Young Guns edge Unicorns in overtime
Young Guns and Unicorns began the game tied with 6 points each in the middle of the pack.
This game went pretty much to expectation with Young Guns taking the play to Unicorns who prefer the defensive shell strategy and waiting for opportunities to arise for a counterattack. Unicorns were able to keep the speedy Young Guns players around the outside and keeping a clean house giving Arthur Chan a better chance to stop any shots that came in. That strategy seemed to work as Chan stopped all 10 shots in the first while
Unicorns were only able to get 4 shots towards Cameron Chiu.
This script continued in the 2nd, and it wasn’t until 9 minutes in that Alvin Sham took advantage of a Young Guns turnover to skate up the left side and fire a slapshot past Cameron Chiu top corner to give Unicorns a 1-0 lead.
Early in the 3rd, Calix Ma finally found a hole as he went short-side top corner on Chan to tie the game. No further scoring in the 3rd as we enter overtime.
In OT, Unicorns went with Rick Chu, Alvin Sham, and John Wade against Young Guns Calix Ma, Yaann Yuen, and Izzac Chan. After gaining the zone, Unicorns lost the puck and Yuen skated down on a 2-on-1 with Calix Ma. Sham slid to prevent the pass, but Yuen found a hole as Ma made no mistake to one-time it past Chan for the winner 26 seconds into OT.
Arthur Chan (Unicorns) had a spectacular game with 35 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) also had a good game facing 16.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Calix Ma (Young Guns)
2. Arthur Chan (Unicorns)
3. Cameron Chiu (Young Guns)
