Unicorns grind out a win over top-ranked RBC Lions
Both teams have been solid in the early season and the game felt like a playoff game, as both teams played a tight-checking game.
RBC took the play to Unicorns, but Unicorns looked happy to play their defensive game and respond on the counterattack. Scott Strickland opened the scoring for RBC, but Alvin Sham was able to respond to close out the 2nd, 1-1.
Rick Chu continued his strong play scoring early in the 2nd, only for Strickland to bang home his 2nd of the night evening out the period again. Although RBC had more shots, Arthur Chan was able to hold the fort and keep the Unicorns in the game.
A nice counterattack by the Unicorns saw Chu score his second from Tracy Wong and John Wade to give Unicorns a 3-2 lead with 9 minutes remaining. In the time, RBC tried desperately to get a tying goal, only to see saves from Chan, or blocks by Unicorn players, or clearings out of the crease in the nick of time. Unicorns weathered the late push from RBC to secure the win, putting them tied for 3rd with AsiaXpat after 4 games.
Carson Leung (LPP - RBC Lions) faced 17 shots while Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 24 shots for the win.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Rick Chu (Unicorns)
2. Scott Strickland (RBC Lions)
3. Tracy Wong (Unicorns)
Young stars too much to handle for slow VetiVa team
VetiVa was coming off their first win of the year, while Young Guns were looking to bounce back after losing a close game to RBC last week.
However, VetiVa's confidence didn’t last long. In fact, first play of the game, Young Gun's Yaann Yuen skated right thru the entire VetiVa team and straight down main street deking out Nicholas Sellars with a forehand
backhand move just 30 seconds in. VetiVa’s Jimmy Lee got his first of the year 5 minutes later before Young Guns' Christopher Lee replied unassisted to regain the lead. 2-1 after the first.
Early in the 2nd, Ray Tang rounded the net and fired a hard shot that Cameron Chiu caught a bit of, but it trickled thru into the far side to tie the game at 2. That didn’t last long though as Young Gun's first line was running circles around VetiVa and forced the penalty. On the powerplay, Young Guns intercepted an attempted clearing and quickly passed down low to create a 2 on 1 with Yuen scoring post and in for her 2nd of the night.
Andy Ma shortly made it 4-2 before Robert Chiu extended his 4-game goal streak with another blast from the left circle into the top corner to keep VetiVa in the game. Calix Ma and Josh Steinhaus exchanged goals late in the 2nd with Young Guns taking a 5-4 lead into the 3rd.
Yuen completed her hattrick with a powerplay goal from the low slot, picking the top corner, glove side to extend lead to 6-4 before Chiu replied with a powerplay goal of his own to keep it interesting after poking in a deflected shot from the point that lobbed over everyone and landed in the crease. But with 2.5 minutes remaining, Calix Ma put the game away with his second of the night.
VetiVa will need to go back to the drawing board to see how they can reduce the chances being given up if they want to increase their win total this season as they’ve been basically outplayed in every game so far. While Young Guns move back into a tie for first with RBC Lions.
Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 27 shots, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) faced 20 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Yaann Yuen (Young Guns)
2. Calix Ma (Young Guns)
3. Robert Chiu (VetiVa)
AsiaXpat holds off JOG Sports for their 2nd win
JOG has been playing some good hockey of late and were looking to bounce back from an overtime loss last week, while Xpat were looking on building on their win over the Unicorns.
The first period was played closely until Anthony Luk skated down the right side and blasted a slapshot past Martin Jim for the first goal. 1-0 JOG after 1 period.
Early in the 2nd, Theo Wong pickups a loose puck in his own zone and looked to race out for a breakaway only to trip up on the blueline. Although JOG was able to recover, Wong still walked around the defense and fired one thru Stephanie Fok to continue his hot streak and tie the game at 1. He quickly doubled up on the next shift after picking up the puck on the left wall and skated it past 2 defenders before deking out Fok for his 2nd.
Not to be outdone, in the following shift, Hugo Fan goes end to end past 4 Xpat players and roofs it on Martin Jim to tie the game again. 3 minutes left in the 2nd, Wong retrieved a rebound from his own end, circled the net and scored as was allowed to cut across slot for his hattrick and a 3-2 lead.
In the 3rd, the teams exchanged powerplay goals, first, Wong with his 4th from a nice give and go with Gavino Ng, followed by Jason Yip (LPP) putting in a rebound from 2 feet out. JOG pulled the goalie for the extra attacker with a minute left but was unable to equalize.
Teams have yet to solve Theo Wong early this season as he has been unstoppable since the 2nd game, scoring 13 goals in 3 games accounting for 76% of AsiaXpat goals so far.
Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 14 shots while Stephanie Fok (JOG) faced 16 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
2. Martin Jim (AsiaXpat)
3. Hugo Fan (JOG Sportswear)
