VetiVa hold off Young Guns and wins in a shootout
Young Guns vs VetiVa is a potential finals match-up if both teams win their semi-final games next week. All 3 games this season between these 2 teams have been close. Although 65% of the zone time was in the VetiVa end, they were able to keep the speedy Young Gun forwards to the outside, and when they couldn’t, Nicholas Sellars was there to bail them out.
Equally on the other end, Cameron Chiu was able to turn aside the shots. It
wasn’t until 2 minutes into the 3rd period did Vetiva finally score on a beautiful play as Justin Kuok won the buck back to Rob Chiu in the right corner and he found Josh Steinhaus alone in front of the net to tap it by Chiu on the far side. 1-0 VetiVa. But just 2 minutes later, Young Guns Yaann Yuen replied after sustained pressure and several shots, she picked up Daniel Pang’s rebound and waited until Sellars went down before roofing it past to tie the game at 1.
Overtime solved nothing, and in the shootout, the first 2 shooters on each side were stopped, but Rob Chiu scored the 3rd VetiVa shot by firing a quick one thru Chiu’s 5-hole. A save would give VetiVa the win, but Calix Ma lasered a shot low glove to keep the shootout going. After changing order, YG’s next 2 shots were stopped by Sellars, and on VetiVa’s 5th attempt, Jason Yip fired it far side blocker side to win the game.
Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 27 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) received 23 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Jason Yip (VetiVa)
2. Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa)
3. Cameron Chiu (Young Guns)
Quads across the board!
Unicorns were looking to bounce back from last week, welcoming back Alvin Sham and Andrew Rueger to the lineup, while RBC was missing top goalie Grant Phillips.
However, the start of the game looked like the Unicorns from last week as RBC looked to run them out of the rink. Just 49 seconds in, Mark Pavey opened with an unassisted goal, 3 minutes later, Scott Strickland finished a 2-on-1 down low, and a few minutes after that, Bruce Hicks scored in a similar fashion as Unicorns D were nowhere to be found. 3-0 after 8:20. Near the end of the first, Alvin Sham scored his first of the night, followed by Sean Tong who finished a drop pass from Chris Lam who then put it into the open net with just 6 seconds remaining in the first. 3-2 RBC.
RBC quickly recovered from the momentary lapse at the end of the first as Strickland scored his 2nd of the night after receiving a nice pass from Shane Weir just 30 seconds into the period. A minute later, Andrew Rueger opened his account with a slapshot crossbar and in to keep it within 1. RBC replied with 2 more goals from Bruce Hicks almost identical as he parked in front of the net and had multiple attempts at the rebound until he was able to pound it by Arthur Chan. 6-3 RBC. But then Alvin Sham scored his 2nd, followed shortly by Rueger with his 2nd as he converted a nice pass from Sean Tong. 6-5 at the end of 2 periods.
Unicorns started the 3rd on the penalty kill, but it was Sham off the faceoff as he walked in past two D and scored a short-handed goal for his own hat trick and tie the game at 6. 3 minutes later, Rueger also got his hattrick after scoring in the high slot after receiving a great pass from the corner from Dominic Ng. 7-6, Unicorns first lead of the game. Rueger then converted a powerplay opportunity for Unicorns midway thru the 3rd getting his 4th goal of the night, before Sham did the same shortly after to make it 9-6. With 3 minutes left, Bruce Hicks also converted another opportunity at the top of the crease for his own 4 goal game, but there were no more goals for RBC to come back as Unicorns come from behind to win 9-7.
This game makes SCIHL history as the first game where 3 different players scored 4 goals while it was a night to forget for both goalies.
Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 31 shots, while Carson Leung (RBC LPP) faced 29 shots against.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Alvin Sham (Unicorns)
2. Andrew Rueger (Unicorns)
3. Bruce Hicks (RBC Lions)
AsiaXpat found another gear in the 2nd to pull away from JOG
This game between JOG Sportswear and AsiaXpat started off even as Jason Wong scored as he defected a point shot in the low slot past Ken Lam’s (JOG LPP) 5 hole to open the scoring. A few minutes later, Donald Chow sped down the left wing and fired a shot from the left faceoff dot between Martin Jim’s glove and pad to tie the game at 1.
But the 2nd period was quite different as AsiaXpat controlled the period and created numerous offensive chances and breakaways. First it was Theo Wong carrying the puck down the middle, fighting thru 2 defenseman, drawing a delayed penalty call, but scoring with a shot blocker side to make it 2-1. A few minutes later, David Finifter blocked a JOG pass from the point and sped down from his own blueline on a breakaway and scored stick side with a shot to make it 3-1. Then with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd, Theo Wong picks up the puck after a broken play and skates in on the right wing and fires another past Lam’s blocker side to make it 4-1 and 3 unanswered goals for Xpat in the 2nd period.
Justin Wong got into the action in the 3rd as he finished a play between Theo Wong and Allan Yee by deking by the defense and putting one top corner glove side thru a screen, before Donald Chow responded with his own on the powerplay, followed by Art Tam (JOG LPP) chipping a rebound in, just 2 minutes later to make it 5-3 and a glimmer of hope for JOG. JOG continued to press but as time wound down, Jason Wong scored his 2nd of the night as he tipped it past Lam after a fanned point shot from Finifter found Wong on the left side of the net with just 27 seconds remaining in the 3rd and putting the game to bed. However, on the ensuing faceoff, Theo Wong skated the puck down the left wing, cut around the defense, and as he skated past the goal, opened up Lam and placed it 5 hole with 4 seconds on the clock for his hattrick and to round out the scoring. 7-3 final for AsiaXpat.
Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 16 shots against, while Ken Lam (JOG LPP) received 23 shots against.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
2. Jason Wong (AsiaXpat)
3. Donald Chow (JOG Sportswear)
