VetiVa hangs on to win a key game over Unicorns to give playoff chances a major boost
This was a key game for both teams to make the playoffs as both teams have struggled this season to win in regulation. It started well for VetiVa when Art Tam fed Jason Yip pinching down the left side, who skates in and shoots far corner over the pad of Arthur Chan to make it 1-0. Next play, Tracy Wong springs Alvin Sham to come down the right side, cuts past the defence and across the crease to slot it 5-hole on Nick Sellars to tie the game. On an ensuing play, VetiVa almost
regains the lead as a scramble had Chan doing a snow angel to make a sprawling save and robbing Paul Chai of an empty net goal. Later in the period, Sham does the same move but just mirrored from the other side. Again, opening up Sellars to go 5-hole to give Unicorns a 2-1 lead. And with 10 seconds remaining in the period, Unicorns Andrew Rueger beats out and icing call, circles out and fires the puck off Sellars and in to make it 3-1 to close the first.
Early in the 2nd, a missed assignment from VetiVa leaves Sean Tong open in front as Sham makes a nice pass from behind the net to score and make it 4-1 Unicorns. Mid-way in the period, Jason Yip’s hot from the point hits a body in front and bounces kindly to Rob Chiu on the side to put into the empty side, 4-2. Tam then frees Leon Mo (VetiVa LPP) down the left side copying the move from Sham to make it 4-3. Mo then does a similar move from the right side after intercepting an errant Unicorns pass to tie the game at 4 after 2 periods.
40 seconds into the 3rd period, Mo passes from the left to a streaking Robbie Lee who fires a laser over the pad and under the glove of Chan to make it 5-4 and regain the lead for VetiVa. A couple minutes later, Rob Chiu cycles across top of circle to the left side, fires the puck across the crease as Lee bounds it over the line for his 2nd of the night, 6-4 VetiVa haf-way in the 3rd, Sham wins a 50/50 puck at the blue line, dekes past 3 VetiVa players and the goalie to make it 6-5.
Unicorns pull Chan in the last couple minutes to try and tie, but several key saves in close by Sellars on a few glorious chances protected the lead until the puck was
finally cleared for Mo to skate down and put into the empty net.
Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 22 shots, while Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 27.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Robbie Lee (VetiVa)
2. Alvin Sham (Unicorns)
3. Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa)
Special teams dominate this game as RBC hold off AsiaXpat
AsiaXpat entered the game needing a win, while RBC was already secure in their playoff spot.
It was AsiaXpat first off the mark as Jerry Tian finished a nice pass from Theo Wong less than a minute in to make it 1-0 for the early lead. Not much else happened in a tightly played first period.
Early in the 2nd, Jackie Chan was setup by Leon Mo with a nice pass to the side of the net where he made no mistake to tie the game at 1. RBC then took a penalty, and in the rush to try and tie the game by AsiaXpat, they allowed 2 short-handed goals by RBC, first by Robert Chiu (RBC LPP) on an unassisted effort, then by Ryan Lee after getting a nice pass from Matt Ng giving RBC a 3-1 lead after 2 periods.
Thinking taking penalties was the answer, RBC once again went short handed as Jackie Chan scored another short-handed goal to make it 4-1 before Xpat's Justin Wong replied on the same powerplay to keep it a 2-goal difference. Theo Wong scored with 4 minutes left to make the last few minutes interesting, but Xpat could not find the tying goal to take it into extra time.
Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 19 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (RBC LPP) received 17 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Jackie Chan (RBC Lions)
2. Leon Mo (RBC Lions)
3. Justin Wong (AsiaXpat)
Young Guns powerplay makes JOG pay after playing with fire in the second
JOG kept their playoff hopes alive last week with a win but were facing top team Young Guns. Luckily for JOG, both AsiaXpat and Unicorns lost in regulation so even with a loss, they were still in the playoff race, while a win would put them in a great spot.
JOG played very well against Young Guns in the first, with chances on both sides, but both Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) and Jerry Tian (JOG LPP) were looking sharp, and rebounds were cleared quickly by their respective defense.
It wasn’t until midway in the 2nd, did the first goal come for JOG on the penalty kill, as Donad Chow intercepted a pass and skated down with a backhand, forehand, deke past Chiu to make it 1-0 with a short-handed goal. JOG must have been watching the RBC game and thought it was a good idea to keep going on the penalty kill. However, they over did it as a series of penalties including a delay of game call put JOG down 5 on 3 for a couple times. Young Guns made them pay, first with a powerplay goal from Yaann Yuen as she received a cross-ice pass from Ryan Lee (YG LPP) to tie at 1, then a mad scramble with five seconds left on the penalty allowed Danny Chiu to pike it in to give Young Guns the lead. On the ensuing faceoff, Nate Brocklehurst intercepts a JOG breakout, skates to the left side, goes around the JOG defence, then cuts across the Tian to puts it into the empty side. 3-1 after 2 periods.
In the 3rd, Felix Lloren had an unassisted goal to round out the scoring as JOG was unable to muster too many chances in the 3rd against the top team.
Jerry Tian (JOG LPP) faced 23 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) received 12 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Yaann Yuen (Young Guns)
2. Jerry Tian (JOG Sportswear LPP)
3. Danny Chiu (Young Guns)
