RBC clinches playoff spot with a convincing 4-1 win over JOG Sportwear

A bit of a different look for both teams for the first game after Chinese New Year. Both teams were missing their starting goalies and RBC had Cameron Chiu replacing Grant Phillips, while JOG had Jerry Tian replacing Stephanie Fok. RBC needed a win to secure their playoff berth while JOG needed to get some points to stay in the playoff race.

RBC as usual took the play to JOG from the get-go, while JOG had trouble stringing passes together for an effective breakout. However, Tian was able to hold the fort on the initial RBC press until 5 minutes in when a massive scramble in front of the net found Donald Chow (JOG defense) lying across the crease preventing Tian to get across to the shot, as Jackie Chan put it in the open side to make it 1-0. Nothing Tian could do on that play.

In the 2nd, RBC continued their pressure, and it took Scott Strickland what felt like 3-6 rebounds in front of the net to finally get the puck by Tian to make it 2-0. A few minutes later, a weird play from behind the RBC net resulted in the puck being deflected off a player and over Cameron Chiu, landing on his back and bouncing into the net for JOGs first, the goal credited to Alan Liu making it 2-1. But it only took 3 minutes later for Jackie Chan to score his 2nd of the game to restore RBC's 2 goal lead as he fired a loose puck past a screened Tian, who had full view of Bruce Hicks on top of the crease.

In the 3rd, Jasper Chow scored a shorthanded goal to round out the scoring in a 4-1 win for RBC. The win secures a playoff spot for RBC, while the loss keeps JOG at the bottom of the standings 4 points out of a playoff spot.

Cameron Chiu (RBC LPP) faced 19 shots, while Jerry Tian (JOG Sportswear LPP) faced 25 shots.

Late powerplay goal gives Young Guns the win over Unicorns in a tight game.

Young Guns entered the game already having secured their playoff spot and the only question was if they would maintain the top seed. Unicorns on the other hand entered the game in 5th spot and needed some points to stay in the playoff race.

The game started out fairly even with chances being shared both directions and it wasn't until the first powerplay that Young Guns scored the first goal on a broken play but Andre Chan was able to find the puck first and put a sweet pass to the backdoor for a tap in by Nate Brocklehurst LPP to open the scoring 1-0. Less than 3 minutes later, Unicorns Rick Chu scored on their own powerplay with Chu’'s shot deflecting off a player and lobbing over everyone into the top corner to tie the game 1-1. 3 minutes later, Alvin Sham (fresh off the plan from the Asian Winter Games) gave a backhand pass to Chu in the slot which he then put stick side for his 2nd of the night and give the Unicorns a 2-1 lead. However, with just 30 seconds left in the period, Nate also scored his 2nd after deking past the defense and putting one by Martin Jim (Unicorns LPP) who was subbing in for Arthur Chan who was at the game, but out with an undisclosed lower-body injury. 2-2 after the first.

In the 2nd, the only goal came after Tracy Wong intercepted a Young Guns pass in the defensive zone and passed to a streaking Sham for a breakaway who fired his patented slapshot past Cameron Chiu to give Unicorns a 3-2 lead after 2 periods.
This game was great for the fans as there were chances going both ways, with both goalies playing well.

In the 3rd, it was Danny Chiu who deflected a shot past Jim to tie the game 6
minutes into the period. After more pressure by Young Guns forcing a penalty, Luca Loi-Faita's point shot went past a number of players and past a screened Jim to regain the lead for Young Guns with 6 minutes left. Unicorns tried to press and with a couple minutes left, pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, only for Yaann Yuen to put it into the empty net with 30 seconds remaining securing the win. The loss keeps the Unicorns in 5th spot, 2 points of out a playoff spot.

Martin Jim (Unicorns LPP) faced 18 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) received 14 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Luca Loi-Faita (Young Guns)
2. Alvin Sham (Unicorns)
3. Rick Chu (Unicorns)

Team defense for Vetiva stops potent AsiaXpat offense

AsiaXpat entered the game in 3rd spot 1 point above VetiVa in the standings who were tied for 4th with the Unicorns. The teams have split the series so far 1-1 with this being potentially a key tie breaker game.

This game was a very closely played defensive game as both teams clogged up the middle and were able to limit scoring chances throughout the game. It wasn't until the last 2 minutes that VetiVa opened the scoring from a nice pass across the crease by Rob Chiu to find Paul Chai at full stretch to guide the puck into the open net. 1-0 Vetiva after the first.

Early in the 2nd, Chai and Chiu pressed the Xpat defense and after winning a turnover was able to put the puck on net with Josh Steinhaus screening. Martin Jim was able to stop the initial shot, but Steinhaus was able to bang home the rebound to give Vetiva a 2-0 lead. It took another 10 minutes before AsiaXpat was able to notch their first goal as Howard Chun fires a laser from the high slot off the post and in using the defense as a screen cutting the lead in half. But VetiVa responded just a minute later as Justin Kuok sprang Chai for a breakaway as he made no mistake putting it 5 hole to regain the 2-goal lead.

While AsiaXpat pressed hard in the 3rd, there was no further scoring. VetiVa winning this key game 3-1.

Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 22 shots against, while Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 28 shots.

With the win, VetiVa with 11 points leapfrogs AsiaXpat with 10 points into 3rd place, while Unicorns (9 points) and JOG (7 points) are in 5th and 6th spots. With just 4 points separating the bottom 4 teams, this is shaping out to be another race to the wire with 4 games left before playoffs.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Paul Chai (VetiVa)
2. Robert Chiu (VetiVa)
3. Justin Kuok (VetiVa)
