Young Guns overcome RBC during the shootout in the battle for top spot

This was expected to be a tight game, and we didn’t get disappointed. Young Guns pressed hard to start the game and their first goal on a 2-1 courtesy of a nice pass from Jason Yip (LPP) as Calix Ma fired a shot from the top of the dot and caught Phillips sleeping as the puck found the top corner. Shortly after, Andre Chan fed a pass right in the slot, and Calix gently re-directly the puck under Phillips who seemed to be sleeping so far in the game and still recovering from the effects of the long holiday break and a cold.

RBC finally replied with another Scott Strickland goal, followed by Bonnie Lui early in the second to draw even. And shortly after, Matt Ng, scoring his first of the year, as he came down on the right side on a 2-1. The D had the forward tied up but Matt picked the top corner with a snipers goal as he caught Cameron Chiu cheating as he went down in the hybrid - making it 3-2 for RBC 1/2 way in the 3rd period. RBC thought they had the insurance goal when Bruce Hicks had a beauty kick goal but that was quickly waved off by the refs.

Going down the wire, Young Guns laid it on as RBC was put on the ropes. Phillips stopped a barrage of shots and with 20 seconds left, RBC should have called a timeout to regroup and put the right people on the ice, but instead, we went with the flow. Another scramble occurred in front of the net. A fanned clearing attempt put the puck on Andre Chan's stick and he fired one at the net, which deflected off Fabrizio Faita and right to Calix standing all alone by the side as he calmly fired a shot over Phillips who had no chance tying the game with 12 seconds remaining and completing his hattrick.

In overtime - although there were crazy chances for both teams, nothing was resolved, and in the shootout, Yaann Yuen scored the only goal after avoiding the Phillips poke check, while Cameron Chiu stopped all 3 RBC shooters (Strickland, Chan, and Mo) to give Young Guns a come from behind win to start 2025 while RBC will be looking at the game that got away.

Grant Phillips (RBC Lions) faced 33 shots against, while Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) faced 23 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Calix Ma (Young Guns)
2. Cameron Chiu (Young Guns)
3. Grant Phillips (RBC)

JOG holds off VetiVa to climb back in the playoff race

This was a key 4-point game for JOG as both teams were close in the race for the final 2 playoff spots.

Midway in the first, Ray Tang (VetiVa) had a beautiful chance on the breakaway to open the scoring only to be stopped by Martin Jim (JOG LPP) as he closed the 5 hole to take it away. A few minutes later during a VetiVa powerplay, Stephen Levac, went end to end as he cut in the center and fired top corner glove to give VetiVa a 1-0 lead. 3 minutes later - Paul Kim was Johnny on the spot as a deflected puck bounced out of the corner and in front of the net as he beat Sellars to the loose puck first to pop it in the open net tying the game at 1. Very late in the first, Donald Chow curled out of the corner and fired a shot that Paul Kim deflected past Sellars to give JOG the lead with just 12 seconds remaining.

The only goal in the 2nd goes to Justin Kuok as he stole the puck at center ice and skated down the right wing firing a laser blocker side past Jim to tie the game at 2.

4 minutes into the 3rd, Rob Chiu collected an inadvertent JOG pass in the high slot as he wired a slapshot top corner blocker side to give VetiVa a 3-2 lead. But shortly after, JOG gets 3 goals in a 5-minute span to respond and take the lead. First, Jimmy Thai backhanding one over a sprawled Sellars after receiving a pass from Corey Ng from behind the net, followed by Corey Ng putting in his own rebound after a cross-ice pass from Ernest Ng, and finally, Hugo Fan stealing the puck at his own blueline and going on a semi-break and going 5-hole on Sellars to give JOG a 5-3 lead with 5 minutes remaining. VetiVa pulled the goalie and Rob Chiu scored a late goal with a minute left, but too little too late as JOG held on for the win 5-4.

Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 22 shots against, while Martin Jim (JOG Sportswear LPP) received 19 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Paul Kim (JOG Sportswear)
2. Hugo Fan (JOG Sportswear)
3. Justin Kuok (VetiVa)

Unicorns gets the extra point in the shootout over AsiaXpat

Both teams are tight in the playoff race and entered the game tied in the standings. Not much separates the 2 teams this year, and this game was no different.

Theo Wong continued his scoring streak getting his first on a solo effort with 5 minutes left in the first period. He followed this up early in the 2nd finishing a pass from Constant Au (Xpat LPP) before Dominic Ng responded for Unicorns, followed shortly by John Wade to tie the game.

There was no further scoring and with the scored still tied, the teams went into a
14-player shootout! Rick Chu and Andrew Rueger started the scoring, before Theo Wong and Allan Yee were able to extend the shootout. The goalies then stopped the next 4 shooters before Nathan Chow finally scored with a deke to the backhand lifting it just over the glove of Martin Jim to give Unicorns the win and more importantly, the extra point in the standings.

Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 15 shots, while Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 13 shots in a little over 2 periods of play.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Nathan Chow (Unicorns)
2. Theo Wong (AsiaXpat)
3. Dominic Ng (Unicorns)
