Another big 3rd period for Young Guns as they continue to roll beating AsiaXpat

Young Guns came into the game with a 3-game win streak, while AsiaXpat was looking to bounce back after playing RBC last week, the other team above them in the standings.

But it didn’t start well, just 3 minutes in Eric Pang opened the scoring with an unassisted effort. It wasn’t until late in the 3rd, that Wong Cheung drove the puck deep into the corner, and then centered where Nathan Kellar was in the slot to bang home his first of the year to tie it up. However, it took just a couple minutes for Danny Chiu to regain the lead with a strong individual effort firing it just over the pad of Carson Leung (LPP). 2-1 after 1.

The teams continued to play an open game exchanging chances, but the only goal came from Calix Ma as he poked it into the open net after a nice pass by Yaann Yuen from the corner. 3-1 after 2.

But something changed in the 3rd. All those chances that didn’t go in earlier, were going in for both sides. First Andre Chan with 2 quick goals just 30 seconds apart, before Howard Chun wired one top shelf to finish a play from Justin Wong and Allen Yee. A few minutes later, Theo Wong scored his 18th of the season to make it 5-3. We had a game again. However, 5 minutes later, Calix Ma scored his 2nd of the night followed shortly by his dad Andy Ma just a minute later to put the game away. Theo Wong and Arry Leung exchanged goals in the last minute of the game to round out the scoring.

Carson Leung (AsiaXpat - LPP) faced 28 shots while Stephanie Fok (Young Guns - LPP) faced 23 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Andre Chan (Young Guns)
2. Theo Wong (JOG Sportswear)
3. Danny Chiu (Young Guns)

Overtime winner by Hugo Fan salvages a 2-1 win over Unicorns

Unicorns entered this game on a 2-game losing streak and missing their top scorer Alvin Sham, while JOG was on a 4-game losing streak, their last win against… the Unicorns in a shootout.

JOG took the play to Unicorns in the first period outshooting Unicorns 8-3. However, Arthur Chan (Unicorns) was up to the challenge keeping it scoreless as he turned aside multiple prime JOG opportunities.

The Unicorns continued to play their defense first game plan and this continued in the 2nd until JOG took a too many men penalty. As Unicorns attacked, they gave up a short-handed goal to JOG captain Eugene Wong. As the period was coming to an end, JOG gave up a breakaway to Andrew Rueger who made no mistake and went bar down on Stephanie Fok to tie the game at 1.

Right off the opening faceoff in the 3rd period, the puck was won back to the JOG defense, but both d-men miscommunicated and allowed Rueger to walk in for a breakaway blueline in, and converting to give Unicorns a 2-1 lead, this after only 6 shots all game. JOG finally got another goal as Jimmy Thai tipped in a point shot from the side of the net to once again tie the game.

And we headed to overtime. In overtime, Hugo fan was freed by Alton Ho and went in alone to give JOG a long-awaited 2nd win.

Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 23 shots against, while Stephanie Fok (JOG Sportswear) received 10 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Hugo Fan (JOG Sportswear)
2. Andrew Rueger (Unicorns)
3. Arthur Chan (Unicorns)

VetiVa squeak by undermanned RBC

RBC looking to keep pace with Young Guns at the top of the league while VetiVa needing a win to stay in 5th spot after JOG won in regulation today.

It started off well for VetiVa as they were able to score on their first chance, as Justin Kuok skated down the left boards and ripped a shot past Grant Phillips (RBC) just a minute into the game. Dream start for VetiVa. However, even with multiple powerplay opportunities, VetiVa was unable to build on the lead. It wasn’t for lack of great chances, but Phillips was there when it was needed.

VetiVa had 5 or 6 great opportunities in the first and 2nd periods but was unable to get one by Phillips. Late in the 2nd, Ryan Lee circled the VetiVa zone and fired one towards the net that hit a defenseman’s glove and past a startled Marco Au (VetiVa LPP) to tie the game.

RBC seemed to gain a lot of momentum from that goal as they then beat VetiVa to most of the loose pucks in the 3rd period and firing shots from everywhere but Au was up to the task. As this game seemed like it was going to go to extra time, Kuok fired a shot from the point which caught a screened Phillips off guard and went 5 hole as Phillips tried to find the puck. This proved to be the decider giving VetiVa a crucial win to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Grant Phillips (RBC Lions) faced 14 shots, while Marco Au (VetiVa - LPP) faced 21 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Justin Kuok (VetiVa)
2. Grant Phillips (RBC Lions)
3. Ray Tang (VetiVa)
