Young Guns come from behind in the 3rd to beat JOG
Top of the table vs the bottom this week. Young Guns came in tied for first, while JOG was sitting in 5th place just 1 point above VetiVa. However, the first 2 periods you wouldn’t know that.
JOG played an excellent first 2 periods withstanding the nice passing and zone possession from Young Guns. Hugo Fan and Henrik Pang exchanged goals in the first, while Alan Lui and Jimmy Thai scored for JOG in the 2nd only allowing Andre Chan to score on a powerplay goal to lead the game 3-2 after 2 periods.
This was not due to a lack of opportunities from Young Guns, but either JOG broke up the last pass, or Stephanie Fok made timely saves as Young Guns buzzed around the JOG zone most of the game. It was the veterans that led the comeback in the 3rd. An early marker from Danny Chiu tied the game, following goals from Luca Loi-Faita, Andy Ma gave Young Guns a 5-3 lead heading into the last 7 minutes.
A powerplay with 2 min left gave JOG a chance to draw close, but instead of getting a powerplay goal, they gave up a shorthanded goal to Yaann Yuen that
essentially sealed the game. Hugo Fan rounded out the scoring in the final 20 seconds, but the game goes to Young Guns.
Cameron Chiu (Young Guns) faced 21 shots while Stephanie Fok (JOG) faced 28 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Daniel Pang (Young Guns)
2. Hugo Fan (JOG Sportswear)
3. Henrik Pang (Young Guns)
Big 2nd period helps VetiVa overcome Unicorns
VetiVa was looking for a win after only 1 win this season, while Unicorns have been playing 500 hockey of late.
Jason Yip, playing on defense this week (as VetiVa continues to juggle their lines) opened the scoring with a blast from the blueline after a faceoff win as Arthur Chan found himself screened. Just a couple minutes later, Alvin Sham continued his scoring streak as he popped in a powerplay goal to tie the game at 1. The first period was back and forth but not a lot of clear chances for either team.
In the 2nd, Rob Chiu scored another of his patented slap shots from the left circle this time over the far pad of Chan. This was followed by Stephan Levac’s shot from the point that deflected off a Unicorns defenseman and lobbed in by Chan for a 3-1 lead. Jimmy Lee then scored his 2nd of the season also from the left faceoff dot as it eluded Chan on the far post. 4-1 VetiVa lead after 2 - a new position for the team.
VetiVa tempted fate by continuing to give the Unicorns powerplay opportunities and this one cost them, as Sham scored his second PP goal of the night by moving Nicholas Sellars and going 5-hole to make it 4-2 with lots of time left. But late in the game, Arthur Tam got the insurance VetiVa needed as Ray Tang did the hard work and set him up in the slot. Unicorns went 2 for 6 on the powerplay, but Sellars was there when needed. A much needed win for VetiVa as it moves them past JOG into 5th in the standings.
Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 18 shots against, while Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) received 13 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Stephen Levac (VetiVa)
2. Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa)
3. Alvin Sham (Unicorns)
RBC Lions end AsiaXpat’s winning streak
Top team and goalie vs hottest scorer in this match-up. RBC tied for first with Grant Phillips leading the goalie standings, and AsiaXpat with Theo Wong having scored 16 goals in the last 5 games.
It was Jackie Chan of RBC to open the scoring after a nice passing play from Rob Chiu (LPP) an Arthur Tam (LPP) forming the 'old guy' line. A couple minutes later, this line scored again this time Tam from a centering pass from Leon Mo behind the net to make it 2-0. It looked like RBC was going to close the first with a 2-0 lead until the team looked like it thought the period was over, and allowed Theo Wong to walk in, deke the defense, and then score just over the pad and under the blocker with 28 seconds left to draw Xpat closer.
In the 2nd, RBC continued to suppress Xpat's attacks and Scott Strickland and Shane Weir each scored to give RBC a 4-1 lead after 2.
Stickland continued in the 3rd with a breakaway forehand backhand finish for his 2nd of the night and Robert Chiu scoring RBC’s 6th from a nice play from Tam and Chan. Juerg Fritschi rounded out the scoring late in the 3rd. RBC wins this matchup 6-2 keeping them tied for first in the league.
