Alvin Sham's Hattrick Powers Unicorns over Vetiva 6-2
October 18th, 2024
Sponsor establishing early dominance
Kicking off the 2024-2025 SCIHL Division 3 season were our continuing sponsor Unicorns, and we welcome our new sponsor, VetiVa Veterinary Hospital to the SCIHL.
Unicorns sharp in their black uniforms, and VetiVa in the smart orange uniforms. The Unicorns are coming back with many returnees from their strong 2023-24 team, but with a key addition of Alvin Sham, one of the leading scorers of the SCIHL. While VetiVa is led by one of the top GM’s Paul Chai - who consistently drafts a strong team.
The chemistry on the Unicorns showed throughout the game as you could clearly see the VetiVa team trying to work out their lines while the Unicorns carried the play. VetiVa’s newcomer goalie, Nicholas Sellars looked good in his first game in Hong Kong stopping 7 of 8 shots in the first period, only letting David Lee’s breakaway midway in the first in as it just trickled thru the 5-hole. VetiVa didn’t generate too many chances until Jason Yip was able to get his first of the season short-handed with 30 seconds left in the period.
The teams exchanged power-play goals to start the 2nd with John Wade scoring first for Unicorns, followed later by Robert Chiu also on the power play. 2-2 midway thru the 2nd. Up to this point, Alvin Sham had a few chances on Sellars to feel him out and after warming up, it was the Shammer show. The next 3 goals were all Sham - all breakaway goals. He scored 2 in the 2nd, and early in the 3rd to complete his hattrick. 5-2 early in the 3rd.
As VetiVa tried to press to get back into the game, it opened them up to more chances and finally, Rick Chu stole the puck at the blue line and came in on 'another' breakaway and went backhand top shelf to close out the scoring. 6-2 was the final with Unicorns outshooting VetiVa 30 to 13.
Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa) faced 30 shots while Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 13 shots.
Three Stars of the game:
1. Alvin Sham (Unicorns)
2. David Lee (Unicorns)
3. Nicholas Sellars (VetiVa)
