Lions show up in force and thump Warriors 10-2
March 22nd, 2024
Going into the third-place game, the Kowloon Warriors came within just a single goal of reaching the SCIHL finals, falling to a strong Macau Aces club. On the other hand, the RBC Lions had a bit of a chip on their shoulders going in as the regular season champions were upset by the last-place Hong Kong Tycoons and were looking for recompense in the form of earning a win in their final game.
The Warriors started strong early on though with the game's first goal courtesy of veteran Dennis Toews. RBC would pull up their bootstraps and respond with Robbie Schremp getting his team on the board. A couple minutes after that, third overall in regular season scoring Greg Smyth would pot the team's second goal, to close out the opening period with a 2-1 RBC lead.
The Warriors would tie it up early in the second frame with a marker by offensive defenseman David Belluche. Unfortunately for Kowloon, their scoring dried up after that. U18 Jacky Liu would find the back of the net for the Lions to make it a 3-2 game. That would be followed by Greg Smyth and Robbie Schremp each getting their second goals of the evening.
Entering the third period sitting on a 5-2 lead, RBC built upon their advantage as Rob Schremp would round out his hat trick. That was followed up by French Canadian Phillipe Laberge scoring his first goal of the season. Laberge has finally found his stride after being away from hockey for 25 years before this season with the Lions. Meanwhile, the Warriors could not muster up much offense, as RBC goaltender Rudi Bernart would end up facing only 12 shots throughout the match.
Despite their five-goal lead, the Lions continued their offensive attack as Jacky Liu scored his second of the night, followed by Chloe Fong. Finally, Greg Smyth would cap off the game with a hatty of his own. The RBC Lions conclude their season with a convincing 10-2 victory over the Kowloon Warriors.
In the first-half of the SCIHL season, the Kowloon Warriors were sitting in last place. The team should pat themselves on their backs as the squad valiantly lifted themselves out of the league basement to finish the regular season.
Meanwhile, the RBC Lions showed why they were the regular season champions. Despite losing in the semi-finals, the team was a formidable force. Led by Robbie Schremp, his domination was evident as he controlled almost every game he played. The former NHLer finishes the 2023/24 SCIHL season with the best performance in the history of Hong Kong ice hockey.
