Aces continue to roll with 5-1 victory over Tycoons

February 9th, 2024

Having gone winless in the last four games of 2024, the HKBN Tycoons desperately needed a win to shake the monkey off its back. Meanwhile, the Manulife Aces were on the rise as they overtook the Tycoons in SCIHL standing near the end of January after sitting in third place for the majority of the season.

Things were off to a rocky start for the Tycoons as they once again gave up the game's opening goal, this time to former Eastern Junior Hockey League star Whitney Olsen, just roughly 30 seconds into the game. Despite the early goal, they wouldn't see another marker until the third period.

Evan Thorpe for the Tycoons and Aces goaltender Craig Gouk virtually stood on their heads, making some fantastic saves on great opportunities had by both squads. However, with just 14 seconds into the third frame, Whitney Olsen would find the back of the net again for a 2-0 Aces lead. the Aces would take the reins from there as Yosef Natour would pot two behind Evan Thorpe and Whitney Olsen would finalize his hat trick, bringing it to 5-0. The Tycoon's Francis Lam, one of the team's offensive bright spots this season, managed to break Craig Gouk's shutout with a goal nearing the end of the game. When all said and done, the game fell in favor of the Manulife Aces in a 5-1 victory over the HKBN Tycoons.

Despite the loss, the Tycoons can take some solace in that it was actually their best game of the calendar year. Up until the third period, the team played great defense and goaltender Evan Thrope was able to make several key saves to keep his squad close. Hong Kong has been missing their top offensive stars Jonny Szychta (out with season-ending knee surgery), Jimi Fanstone, and Connor Quinn for much of 2024. With a complete roster, their chances should surely improve.

The Aces meanwhile are firing on all cylinders as the team has worked through some early season issues and has translated it into second place in the SCIHL standings. Aside from Whitney Olsen, it's hard to ignore Yosef Natour's contribution to the Aces offense, coupled with the stellar play on the team's back end with the likes of veteran Tom Allen, U18 Issac Yip, and not to mention slick offensive defenseman Jesse Lussier.
