RBC Lions hang on to down HKBN Tycoons 7-6

March 1st, 2024

Entering the game, the Hong Kong Tycoons were on a six game slide, bringing the team all the way down into the SCIHL basement from its second place status back in December. Meanwhile the RBC Lions have recently felt the heat from the red hot Macau Aces in the standings and were looking to preserve first place in the league.

The Lions were off to a good start within the game's first minute as Robbie Schremp casually sniped one top corner past Tycoons goaltender Evan Thorpe. Two minutes later, Schremp would score another goal that almost identical to his first. Down by two, the Tycoons found the back of the net at the five minute mark on a Francis Lam goal. But in the blink of an eye, the Lions were up by two again on a goal by Jeff Griffin.

Despite this, Hong Kong would not back down as LPP Tycoon Whitney Olsen would find some space beneath the blocker of RBC's LPP goaltender Ray Loo. Following that, Connor Daly would tie things up for the Tycoons just 20 seconds later. With the game even at three a piece, RBC LPP Kevin O'Toole would break the stalemate with about three minutes remaining in the first period. Just a minute later, Greg Smyth regained the two goal advantage for the Lions to close out the period's scoring, sitting at 5-3 for RBC.

Unlike the eight goals in the opening frame, the second period had much lower scoring, with both teams only potting one goal each. The period's first goal came with just a minute and 30 seconds remaining as Robbie Schremp, who must have been bored or something, rounded out his hat trick making it 6-3 for the Lions. However the Tycoons would reduce their deficit back down to two with Connor Daly's second goal of the evening and his 15th marker of the season.

Going into the third period up 6-4, RBC would expand their lead with U18 points leader Chloe Fong finding the back of the net early in the frame. That would prove to be the Lions' final goal of the night as the Tycoons tried desperately to mount a comeback. Hong Kong's Francis Lam would score his second goal, pulling his team within two again. Then with a minute and a half left in the third period, the Tycoons would make it a one goal game on LPP Whitney Olsen's second marker of the match. With Evan Thorpe pulled, the six Tycoon attackers pressed hard for the equalizer.

Their best opportunity came on a cross crease pass by Whitney Olsen over to Sean Navin. Unfortunately for the Tycoons, Navin was stoned on his one timer by Ray Loo who read the play, sliding from post to post, making the save of the game with his right pad and preserving the lead for RBC. In a narrow victory, the Lions edge out a 7-6 win over the Hong Kong Tycoons.

It would be remiss if we didn't mention Rob Schremp's six point night, five of which coming in the first period. Frustrated, there was little the Tycoons' defenders could do except shake their heads and perhaps shout out a few obscenities. Probably the best hockey player to suit up in Hong Kong, if not south-east Asia, the former Edmonton Oilers 1st rounder is the driving force in the RBC Lions' success this season. On the other end, with seven losses in a row and having gone winless in 2024, the Hong Kong Tycoons have locked themselves dead last in the SCIHL standings.

On the bright side, their offensive leaders continue to produce despite the losses. Leon Ruelle, Connor Daly and Francis Lam each finished with four points in the game, with the latter contributing despite being ill the past few days.
