SCIHL Division 3 - Week 15 Scoreboard

March 1st, 2024

Doing all they can

Both teams had a lot to play for this game. YATS Engineers needed to win to keep their hopes alive, while Ice Wolves having secured their playoff spot, needed a win to secure 3rd spot and avoid league leaders RBC Lions in the semi-finals.

YATs, the hottest team not named RBC in 2024 (1 win behind RBC) had really turned around their play in the new year. Unfortunately for them, there were more games played in 2023 where they were tied with JOG for the least wins that put them in this position.

YATS started the game well and had good possession in the Wolves zone until an errant pass back to the point released David Finifter down the right boards and he lasered a shot past Stephanie Fok low stick side to open the scoring. A minute later, Art Tam one timed a pass from Rob Chiu into the top corner short side to even the score followed by Justin Kuok tipping Brendon Lui’s shot past Martin Jim (Ice Wolves LPP) a few minutes later. 2-1 after 1 period.

Ice Wolves had several good chances only to be thwarted by Fok and the only goal in the 2nd period was when Brendon Lui finished a pass from the corner by Rob Chiu giving YATS a 3-1 lead after 2 periods.

Jackie Chan scored early in the 3rd in close as he jammed his 2nd chance past Fok, but Tam regained the 2-goal lead on the next shift walking past the Ice Wolves D and putting one under the blocker. Brendon rounded out the scoring with his 2nd of the night into the empty net to secure the win for YATS who did all they could to put some pressure on the Unicorns ahead of their game, but YATS playoff fate now depended on JOG beating the Unicorns in regulation time.

Stephanie Fok (YATS) faced 17 shots for the win while Martin Jim (Ice Wolves LPP) faced 26 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Stephanie Fok (YATS Engineers)
2. Brendon Lui (YATS Engineers)
3. Justin Kuok (YATS Engineers)

Defensive masterclass

The Unicorns needed to secure at least 1 point from this game to make the playoffs, while a win would put them into the 3rd spot avoiding top-seeded RBC Lions.

A good crowd gathered to watch the outcome and the Unicorns deflated the mood early on by scoring first. Kiu Lee finishing a pass from Leon Mo giving Unicorns a 1-0 lead against the play as JOG was playing well as usual in the first period, creating a lot of opportunities but unable to get pucks by Arthur Chan.

The Unicorns seemed to wake up and started to lock down the middle of the ice as they normally do, and in the 2nd limited JOG to only 1 shot on net while Lee scored once again on the powerplay to give Unicorns a 2-0 lead after 2 periods.

Donald Chow finally solved Chan early in the 3rd giving the crowd (many YATS supporters) something to cheer for, but Rick Chu silenced the crowed 5 minutes later by restoring the 2- goal lead and Tracy Wong scored an insurance to round out the scoring. 4-1 final for Unicorns as they get ready to face an injury hit AsiaXpat team in the semis.

Arthur Chan (Unicorns) faced 11 shots, while Keira Mok (JOG LPP) faced 19 shots.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Kiu Lee (Unicorns)
2. Leon Mo (Unicorns)
3. Tracy Wong (Unicorns)

Matchup of the top seeds

With both RBC Lions and AsiaXpat secure in their playoff spots, this game was just a warmup to a potential final if both win their semifinals and this proved to be good match up.

The game was evenly played through out with Calix Ma opening the scoring late in the first to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead only for Allan Yee to tie it up a minute later. 1-1 after the first.

Ma scored again just 28 seconds into the 2nd period after being set free from a long pass from Eric Pang. Mid period, Paul Chai wowed the crowd with a laser to the top corner glove side to tie it again. Xpat’s looked for more as Charles Liu was called for a hook and went on the powerplay. However, it was Jovi Wat spoiling that with a smart short-handed marker to regain RBC’s lead. 3-2 after 2.

At the start of the 3rd, it was Xpats turn to parade to the penalty box, only for Michael Lam to return the favour and score his own short-handed goal to tie the game again. But playing with fire cost AsiaXpat as Danny Chiu scored on the powerplay giving RBC the 4-3 lead. Wat rounded out the scoring with an empty netter as Xpat’s pressed near the end for the equalizer putting the game out of reach.

Martin Jim (AsiaXpat) faced 25 shots while Keira Mok (RBC) faced 18 shots to close out the regular season.

Three Stars of the game:
1. Calix Ma (RBC Lions)
2. Danny Chiu (RBC Lions)
3. Jovi Wat (RBC Lions)
