VetiVa captures Division 3 Championship with a dominant 5-1 win over
Manulife
VetiVa claimed the SCIHL Division 3 Championship in emphatic fashion, defeating Manulife 5-1 in the finals behind a relentless offensive performance and a four-goal night from Theophilus Wong.
The championship match opened with immediate intensity, and VetiVa wasted no time asserting control. Just 1:10 into the game, Theo Wong picked up his own rebound, then wrapping the puck in, capitalizing on a defensive breakdown to give VetiVa an early 1-0 lead. The pressure continued at 3:12 when Josh Steinhaus doubled the advantage, poking the puck past Phillips
after the point shot from Justin Lam was deflected in front and to the side where Steinhaus went full extension to poke in. Wong capped a dominant first period at 9:10, when he deflected a Juerg Fritschi shot from the blueline in the low slot which found its way through to send VetiVa into the first intermission with a commanding 3-0 lead.
VetiVa continued to build momentum early in the second period. Only 20 seconds in, Wong completed his hat trick, picking up a loose puck at his own blueline and going down for a breakaway, making a forehand backhand deke past Phillips to make it 4-0. Manulife pushed back with urgency, but Adrian Huen stood tall in net, turning aside every chance to keep the championship firmly in VetiVa’s grasp.
The title was effectively sealed in the third period when Wong struck again at 5:50, finishing a drop pass from Matt Ng then cutting into the slot and firing a laser past the head of Phillips to extend the lead to 5-0. Manulife avoided the shutout late, as Gary Lawrence scored shorthanded at 11:24 off a cross-crease feed from Reto Broennimann, but the outcome was no longer in doubt.
Adrian Huen delivered a composed performance on the biggest stage, stopping 9 of 10 shots to secure the championship win. Phillips faced sustained pressure at the other end, making 16 saves on 21 shots in the loss.
With the victory, VetiVa are crowned SCIHL Division 3 Champions, closing the season with a statement performance in the final.
