Division 3 Opening Night

October 15th, 2021

Welcome back SCIHL Division 3!

Division 3 kicked off the season opener with Taboo Bar vs HoiHoi Pancake House. Taboo wasted no time to impress their sponsor Dev in attendance by getting an early goal in the first minute - Stuart Chan getting a fortunate deflection to get the first goal of the season past Sam Wong in net for HoiHoi. That seemed to wake up HoiHoi as both teams battled hard in the first to keep the score 1-0.

In the 2nd period Taboo started to take over possession. Grant Phillips scored to take Taboo up 2-0 before HoiHoi received a goalie interference penalty while pressing for a reply. On the ensuing powerplay - Taboo had full possession and almost scored on a rebound, but Michael Shoong sacrificed his body by sliding across to protect the empty net. Unfortunately, in the wild scramble after the block, Taboo was able to find the loose puck and slide a powerplay marker past Sam.

As the 2nd period was winding down, Sam Wong came out of the net to deny Derek Hu a breakaway but ended up gifting the clearing to Alton Ho (LPP) for an empty net with 2 seconds remaining in the 2nd.

In full control now, Taboo’s Derek Hu added a 5th at the start of the 3rd period on a nice 2 on 1 with Stuart Chan. Gavino Ng of HoiHoi rounded out the scoring sneaking one by Kirsten Rendell and spoiling her shutout bid. But too little to late. Sam Wong finished the night with 29 saves while Kirsten stopped 11 for the win.

The Three Stars:
1. Kirsten Rendell - Taboo
2. Stuart Chan - Taboo
3. Grant Phillips - Taboo

The Harry Cho show
This game was a nail bitter. A very evenly played game between CHG and Inetasia seeing momentum changing several times.

CHG started quickly with Harry Cho getting his first of the night just one minute in. Inetasia's Wong Chun Lok and Andrew Weich responded giving Inetasia a 2-1 lead after 1. Ryan Culliton tied it early in the 2nd only to have Inetasia’s Dick Lee restore their lead shortly after.

Then it was the Harry Cho show.
Cho & Hugo Fan combined to score the next 3 goals over a 6-minute span to turn the game around for CHG and complete the hat-trick for Cho. Hugo Fan had a beauty as he circled out from behind the net after Cho dropped him the puck, spun at the faceoff circle and used the defense to fire a laser into short side the top corner past a screened Chan.

Danny Chiu and Michael Welsh rounded out the scoring in the 3rd, CHG holding on for the win. Edward Lee and Arthur Chan each stopped 17 shots on the night in a very evenly played game.

The Three Stars:
1. Harry Cho - China Hockey Group
2. Michael Welsh - China Hockey Group
3. Danny Chiu - Inetasia

Bravo & Asiaxpat looked to be an even matchup on paper and the first 2 periods proved just that as the teams played each other close exchanging a goal each in each period entering the 3rd period tied 2-2.

Bravo scored 2 early goals in the 3rd for what looked like a comfortable 4-2 lead with under 10 minutes remaining, Jason Yip scoring his 2nd on the evening (2g,1a). However, Bravo seemed to run out of gas after that as the dynamic Pang duo of Eric Pang and Hamish Pang (no relation) ran havoc on the Bravo defense scoring or setting up the next 5 Asiaxpat goals to close out the 3rd period. The duo combined for 4g, 4a leading Asiaxpat to their first win of the season.

Both goalies played well with Jerome Lui (Asiaxpat) stopping 14, while Arthur Chan (Bravo LPP) stopped 17 on the night.

The Three Stars:
1. Hamish Pang - Asiaxpat
2. Eric Pang - Asiaxpat
3. Jason Yip - Bravo
