SCIHL Division 3 - Week 13 Game Summary

Friday, 24 February 2023

Nines dominate the scoresheet

Lion Rock is running out of games to make the playoffs. 2 points out of the last playoff spot with 2 games left, they had to face Asiaxpat who is battling with HMY for top spot.

Unfortunately, Lion Rock was missing pretty much 1/2 their regular team due to injuries and travel. Although LPPs helped, they lacked the chemistry to keep a full strength Asiaxpat at bay. The combination of Michael Wong (#9), Jason Yip (#19), and Hamish Pang (LPP - #91) combined for 12 points on the night and 85% of the offense for Asiaxpat. Pang finished with a hattrick, Yee with 2, and Wong with a goal to power Asiaxpat to a 7-3 drubbing of Lion Rock.

Kiera Mok was steady in net for Asiaxpat taking over for Jerome Liu who is on LTIR, while Carson Leung stood in for Izumida Koji who was on the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km challenge (congratulations!). Leung faced 31 shots while Mok faced 19.

The loss puts Lion Rock in the position of hoping the other teams also falter to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Just like the Rock

The Unicorns were hoping their defense was like a rock facing top team HMY as they face a similar playoff situation as Lion Rock. However, they ended up closer to Lion Rock instead.

Things started brightly for the Unicorns, despite being outshot 12-7 in the first, they had 2 special team goals. First a powerplay goal by John Wade, followed by a shorthanded goal by Andrew Rueger. 2-0 after 1 period.

The Unicorns opened the 2nd with Rueger’s 2nd of the night, things were going according to plan up to this point. However, they were unable to limit the prime changes HMY were getting on Bernard Lam, and while he valiantly made key
saves, HMY outshot them 14-3 and in the process tied the game with 3 goals. Leading scorer Donald Chow with the first, followed by 2 more from Rick Chu. 3-3 after 2 periods.

In the 3rd, the Unicorns finally got their defense sorted and only got outshot 5-3, but it was not enough as Rick Chu converted for his hattrick and the game winner, while rookie Moses Fung (LPP) playing his first game in the SCIHL was able to close out the Unicorns for the win.

The loss keeps the Unicorns tied with Lion Rock, their playoff hopes relying on HoiHoi slipping up in their remaining games.

Bernard Lam faced 31 shots while Moses Fung faced 13.

Hanging on by a fingernail

HoiHoi who finally found themselves in a playoff spot, was hoping to capitalize on the losses by both Lion Rock and the Unicorns earlier in the evening and solidify their chances to securing the final spot. However, they were facing the red-hot Taboo Devils who have turned around their season and have till now, gone undefeated in 2023 winning 4 straight before tonight.

It was Leon Mo who is chasing for top scoring who opened the scoring just over a minute into the game as he broke in alone on the left and made no mistake firing a low stick side goal past Kirsten. Just a minute later, Bryan Leung doubled the lead, then followed up with his second of the evening just 7 minutes later. It wasn’t until the last couple minutes when Jackie Chan finally broke thru to give HoiHoi some hope closing the first down 1-3.

The late goal seemed to rally the team as a much better HoiHoi team held off Taboo in the 2nd, while getting 3 of their own to get the lead for the first time tonight. Chan with his 2nd, followed by Hamish Pang and Alastair Grigg, leaving HoiHoi with a 4-3 lead going into the 3rd period.

Unfortunately for HoiHoi, that was all they were getting tonight as Taboo woke up from their nap and ratted off 6 unanswered goals in third period. Mo with his 2nd, followed by Boyce Wong (LPP) with 2, Kiu Lee getting into the action which her 4th of the year, Jason Yip, and Boyce rounding out the scoring with his hatty with 3 minutes remaining. Taboo’s offense tore through HoiHoi’s defense in the 3rd to come out with a convincing win and leaving HoiHoi’s playoff spot still in doubt.

Edward Lee faced 16 shots while Kirsten Rendell faced 26.
