SCIHL Division 3 - Week 7 Game Summaries

Friday, 2 December 2022

The Wong Luk Express continues to dominate

Asiaxpat continued their dominance over the Unicorns as the top line of Jim Wong, Michael Wong, and Anthony Luk continued their scoring streak this game. Their fast break and cycling game wore down the defensive shell put up by the Unicorns. It took most of the first before Anthony Luk was able to put one by Bernard Lam.

Michael Wong then scored 2 from cycling plays before getting a chance in front. 3-0 after 2 periods.

Luk also got his 2nd of the night midway thru the 3rd, and it was just a question of whether Jerome would be able to maintain his shutout until Arthur Tam spoiled his bid as he tucked in a nice bass from Tracy Wong. But too little too late, for the Unicorns who rarely tested Lui tonight.

Jerome Lui stopped 20 shots, while Bernard Lam stopped 28.

Homely back in the win column with another big win

It seems like Homely is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team this year. When they lose, it’s a close game, but when they win, it’s a blowout. Last time they played HoiHoi early in the season, they walked away with a 7-3 win. After losing previous 2 games by a goal each, Homely was looking to get back in the win column, while HoiHoi enters the game on a 2-game win streak.

Things started well for HoiHoi with Hamish Pang who’s trying to catch Michael Wong at the top of the scoring race as he broke in on a breakaway and went forehand backhand on Fiscella just 2 minutes in. However, Homely tied it on the ensuing faceoff as Chai poked a loose puck past Rendell. Homely continued to capitalize on rebounds as they put 3 more by before the end of the first, Law, Ang, and Chai with his second to close the first period 4-1.

The second period was more even as Homely and HoiHoi exchanged goals, Ang again, and Donald Chow for Homely, while Josh Steinhaus scored his first in his first game this season after coming off LTIR. And a gambling Rob Chiu was able to intercept a Homely attack at the blue line and pass it to a wide open Jackie Chan who also when forehand backhand and score. End of the 2nd, 6-3 Homely.

But as HoiHoi continued to gamble to try and come back, Homely kept capitalizing on the counterattack and it was all Homely in the 3rd. 5 goals for Homely, Chow with his second, Rick Chu and Gavino Ng chipping in, and Chai getting his 3rd and 4th goal of the night to cap the scoring.

Kirsten Rendell faced 30 shots, while Anthony Fiscella faced 24.

Defense First

Lion Rock came into this game with a .500 record, while Taboo was trailing the standings with just 5 points.

The first period started well for Taboo as Kenny Chiu and Bryan Leungboth tallied after a dominating first period where Taboo outshot Lion Rock 14-5.

The 2nd period was more even as both teams tried to get an edge. But neither team could score.

The 3rd period continued with most of the pressure was from Taboo, however as they continued to press, Lion Rock was able to breakout and have the odd counterattack. This unfortunately for Taboo was quite often Lion Rock scored the next 4 goals as Derek Hu, Mark Uhrynuk with 2, and Jasper Chow all scored in a 7-minute span to put Lion Rock up 4-2 with 5 minutes to go. Taboo kept the pressure on, but was not able to get another by Izzy until Michael Wong (LPP) scored with 26 seconds left. Lion Rock held on for the win putting
them 3rd in the standings, while Taboo continues to trail HoiHoi in 6th.

Koji Izumida faced 30 shots, while Edward Lee faced 20 on the night.
