SCIHL Division 3 - Week 6 Game Summaries

Friday, 25 November 2022

Quick strikes put the game away early

This game looked evenly matched as both HoiHoi and Lion Rock won in extra time last week and were only 2 points apart in the standings. However, perhaps it was a hangover from the World Cup win for Japan over Germany playing apart, but HoiHoi once again struck early, this time only 15 seconds into the game. Bonnie Lui broke down an put one by a startled Izumida. She then got her 2nd of the night just 3 ½ minutes later. HoiHoi was dominate with
the puck, and within 7 minutes, HoiHoi was up 4-0, a beautiful slapshot in the slot by Paul Kim, and a rebound by Paul Chai (LPP). This period was all HoiHoi as Lion Rock looked a bit out of sorts as they were unable to prevent HoiHoi from generating chances. Jackie Chan then made it 5-0 to end the first.

Lion Rock seemed to regroup after the break and started to play their usual defensive shell, except they forgot that to score, they needed to go down the other end of the ice. Although they didn’t allow a goal in the 2nd, they only generated 1 shot on HoiHoi’s Rendell.

This trend continued in the 3rd as Justin Hau put away a rebound making it 6-0 before Donald Chan finally tallied for Lion Rock as he put away a loose puck after Bruce Hicks made a nice individual effort to drive into the zone and get a shot off. But it was too little too late. Jackie Chan scored his 2nd of the night, while Jasper Chow got a late goal for Lion Rock.

Kirsten Rendell had a relatively light workday ahead of Thanksgiving only seeing 11 shots, while Koji Izumida had his typical workload, and faced 38 shots on the night.

Heavyweight tilt!

This game lived up to the hype. The top 2 teams in the SCIHL did not disappoint with a closely fought game. Homely came out strong and thru a close checking first period, outshot Asiaxpat 10-5, but had nothing to show for it as Jerome Lui shut the door time after time.

It wasn’t until the 2nd did Homely put one by Lui, after stopping a shot, the rebound went right up the slot with Paul Chai one timing the rebound into the open side while doing a 'superman' move as he shot it. Asiaxpat’s Michael Wong then tied it at 1, and shortly after, gave Asiaxpat the lead with a number of give and go’s with Jim Wong and David Finifter. 2-1 after 2 period.

The third was a mirror image of the 2nd, but this time, it was Asiaxpat scoring first, another by Michael Wong completing his hattrick in the first minute of the first, before Homely scored the next 2. Jimmy Thai out racing the Asiaxpat D to get a breakaway as he deked around Lui’s pokecheck, followed by Warren Ang putting a rebound in to tie the game at 3.

Into the 3 on 3 overtime we went and it looked like we were heading to another shootout this week, when in the last minute, Asiaxpat's Jim Wong and Jason Yee were able to chip the puck out for a streaking Michael Wong to skate down the ice and wire a beautiful shot top corner by Fiscella to win the game, and tally his 4th goal of the night.

Jerome Lui stopped 24 shots, while Anthony Fiscella stopped 14.

Monkey off Taboo's backs

Taboo entered the game losing 4 straight, but each game they were improving, while the Unicorns were entering the game on a 3 game winning streak. And Taboo came out flying, swarming the Unicorn zone, and preventing them from clearing the puck, and eventually wore them down, Kenny Chiu getting the first goal just 1:45 in.

However, Taboo seems to relax after a goal, and just 21 seconds later, Unicorns Dave Lee made an individual rush and tied it at 1. The Unicorns continued to get hemmed and were hoping to get out of the period with a 1-1 tie, but eventually Taboo’s Leon Mo was able to find some space and cut out from the corner, lasering a one top corner shot sort side from the goal line surprising Unicorns goalie Carson Leung (LPP). 2-1 Taboo. But once again, they seem to relax and the Unicorns Anthony Luk (LPP) came into the zone, cut across and used the defense as a screen and put one by Edward Lee tying the game once again. That goal seemed to take the momentum away from Taboo as with 6 seconds left in the first, Justin Wong continued his 5-game scoring streak. 3-2 Unicorns after 1.

The 2nd period proved to be a draw as each team scored a goal first by Luk for his 2nd of the night, then Kiu Lee, left all alone in the slot made no mistake putting it by Leung’s stick side for her first of the season. 4-3 Unicorns after 2.

The 3rd period continued like the second as both teams probed and tried to get the next goal. Unfortunately for the Unicorns, another missed assignment left Kiu Lee open in the same spot again, and she again made no mistake scoring her 2nd on the night and tying the game up for Taboo.

Overtime - both teams exchanged excellent chances only to miss the net or hit a body, until the final seconds when a missed pass turned into a breakaway for Leon Mo who deked Leung for the game winner with 27 seconds remaining in OT.

Both Carson Leung (LPP) and Edward Lee faced 21 shots on the night.

Taboo gets back in the win column, while the OT loss puts the Unicorns into a 2nd place tie with Homely. Tonight’s losses by Homely, Lion Rock, and Unicorns, mean only 2 points separate 2nd and 6th positions in the standings.
