Jennifer Nguyen' Late Goal The Difference

A late goal with 1:56 left in the third period by Jennifer Nguyen was the game winner as Sapporo defeated the Sam Wai Raptors 10-8 in another wild Division 1 SCIHL game. Nguyen wristed into the yawning cage after a mad scramble in front of Raptor’s goalie Kevin Rushton.

The Raptors must feel like the Vancouver Canucks after squandering leads in multiple games this season. In this game, they had leads of 4-1 and 5-2 but let Sapporo back in the game. Sapporo erased the 5-2 deficit with 3 quick goals in the second in a span of 4 minutes. Jeff Wall regained the Raptor’s lead before the end of the period but it was all Sapporo to start the third. Rhett Willcox, Bryan MacFarlane and Blake Steele did all the damage. But the Wall and Bryan Crane combo got the Raptors back on even terms. Crane had a monster night as it was his 4th goal and it came shorthanded with less than 5 minutes left to play.

However, Nguyen’s goal late in the game gave Sapporo the lead and the win. Steele added an empty netter for his 4th of the night. Steele’s motivation was probably having former SCIHL Division 1 all-star, Mark Irwin in attendance for the game. Irwin looked like a GM preparing for next season.
