Rhett’s Hatty Was Too Much For The Raptors

Rhett Wilcox overcame the shock of being traded off the top team in the SCIHL, and scored the overtime winner for Sapporo, in a thrilling 9-8 win. Wilcox’s second goal and OT winner was the same as he barged in past the Sam Wai defence and deked to his forehand past the pad of Craig Gouk, who was once again standing in for Kevin Rushton, who is expected to be back the following game.

The game went back and forth with Sapporo taking a 4-2 lead after the first. But in the second period, Sam Wai scored 4 teams to take over the lead 6-4. Jeff Wall made it 7-4 just 22 seconds into the third. A minute later, Wilcox scored his first of the night when he skated into the zone and ripped a shot into the top corner past the blocker of Gouk. Shortly afterwards, Blake Steele closed the gap to 1 and that prompted Sam Wai to take a time out to slow things down.

It did for a short period of time until Wilcox tucked in this second of the night. However, Sam Wai regained their lead when Captain Francois Esterhusizen slid one past Sammy Wong as he lost his balance coming across his crease. Then with only 58 seconds remaining, Jeff Griffin made a nice block at the Sapporo blueline to set up a 2 on 1 with Steele. Griffin made a great pass to Steele who made no mistake.

The game went into OT where Wilcox finished the game with a dazzling individual effort.

Gouk stopped 17 while Wong stopped 24.
